# How To Fix TF2 Server Lag

Lag on a TF2 server usually comes down to a few things: a slow server CPU, a weak connection or poor routing, or players joining from a distant region. High ping, low FPS, and choppy frames can all look similar in-game, but they have different causes, and knowing the difference is the first thing to sort out before you touch any settings. Once you know whether the problem is the server or the client, learning how to fix TF2 server lag and performance issues gets a lot easier, and your team can get back to fragging smoothly.

## Check Server FPS and CPU Usage

1. Access your [Apollo Panel](https://control.sparkedhost.us/).

2. Go to the **Console** tab.

3. Type \`stats\` in the console press **Enter**.

4. Check the **FPS** column. If it is close to **66.67**, that's good. If it drops below **60** during a match, the server is struggling.

5. Check the **CPU** column. Normally it should stay below **100**. If it is near **100** while players are connected, the server is overloaded and may need fewer plugins or a higher plan.

6. Run stats again while players are connected, since an empty server will always look healthy. Repeat it a few times during a busy match.

## Set Network Rates

This helps make gameplay smoother by reducing choke points and lag spikes, but it won't raise your server's FPS or lower its CPU usage.

1. Access the [Apollo Panel](https://control.sparkedhost.us/)

2. Stop the server.

3. Go to the **Files** tab.

4. Open the \`tf\` folder, then the \`cfg\` folder.

5. Click **New File**.

6. Add the following lines:

```
   sv_minrate 100000
   sv_maxrate 0
   sv_minupdaterate 66
   sv_maxupdaterate 66
   sv_mincmdrate 66
   sv_maxcmdrate 66
```

1. Name it \`server.cfg\`

2. Click **Save Content**.

3. Start the server.

## Remove Heavy Plugins

1. Access the [Apollo Panel](https://control.sparkedhost.us/).

2. Type \`sm prof start\` in the console and let the server run with players for a few minutes.

3. Type \`sm prof stop\` to generate the report.

4. Go to the **Files** tab.

5. Navigate to the following directory: \`tf/addons/sourcemod/logs/\`

6. Find and check the report. If you are unsure about the report. [Contact support](https://billing.sparkedhost.com/submitticket.php).

7. Navigate to the following directory: \`tf/addons/sourcemod/plugins/\`

8. Remove the heavy or unneeded plugins.

9. Restart the server.

## Lower Player Slots

1. Access the [Apollo Panel](https://control.sparkedhost.us/).

2. Go to the **Startup** tab.

3. Lower the **Max Players** field.
