How Much RAM Do You Need For A Project Zomboid Server?

Running a smooth Project Zomboid server depends heavily on having the right amount of RAM. Too little, and you risk lag, crashes, and unhappy survivors. Too much, and you might be overpaying for resources you won’t use. The ideal RAM depends on your player count, mods, and map size.

For Vanilla Project Zomboid Servers

A base of around 4 GB of RAM is needed to run a smooth vanilla server. This covers the server itself and a few players.

For small groups of 2 to 8 players, it is recommended to allocate around 4 to 6 GB of RAM, starting with a baseline of approximately 2 GB and adding about 0.5 GB for each active player.

For larger groups ranging from 10 to 30 players, the RAM requirement increases significantly, with around 6 GB needed for 8 players and between 8 and 10 GB for around 20 players.

For Modded Project Zomboid Servers

Mods significantly increase RAM usage. On even lightly modded servers (around 50 mods with just two players), you may see more than 5 GB of the allocated 6 GB being used. Heavily modded servers for more players that are frequently active on the server often require 20 GB or more of RAM.
