How to setup and install ViaVersion

ViaVersion is a plugin for Minecraft servers that enables players to connect to servers using different game versions without compatibility concerns. This is very handy for Minecraft servers who wish to support previous game versions. In this article, we will go through the process of setting up and installing ViaVersion on your Minecraft server.

Installing and Using ViaVersion

Note that ViaVersion only works with newer versions, even on subversions! You can connect older versions by using ViaBackwards and ViaRewind. You can check it by using this tool if you're unsure what Via* plugins you need, or you can decide which Via* plugins you need to use by looking at the chart below.

We will be using this scenario as my example for the installation process below.

The server is running 1.19.X
I would like to allow 1.18.X version’s players to join my server.

Download the ViaVersion plugin & ViaBackwards plugin by hitting the “Download Now” button from the spigot website.

All download links to each of the Via* plugins.

ViaVersion
ViaRewind
ViaBackwards

Login to the control panel, and select the server on which you would like to set up ViaVersion.

Next, Head over to “File Manager” under the basic category.

Upload both plugins (ViaVersion & ViaBackwards) to the “plugins” folder.

After you have uploaded the plugin(s), you will need to restart your server for the changes to take effect. After the server reboots, players should be able to join the server using 1.18.x.

Note: Remember, Players are going to connect to the server using older versions. They will not be able to see the new blocks! In this situation, an example of a block that 1.18.x players won't be able to see sculk!
