How To Use Color Codes in Minecraft

What Are Color Codes in Minecraft?

Color codes in Minecraft are a fun and creative way to customize your text, whether it's on a sign, in chat, or in server messages. These Minecraft color codes let you format your text with different colours, styles like bold text, strikethrough text, and even custom game commands. This guide will help you learn how to use color codes in Minecraft Bedrock Edition effectively.

Note: This article focuses on using color codes in Minecraft Bedrock Edition

Using Minecraft Color Codes

To use a Minecraft color code, you'll need to use the special formatting code symbol: § (section symbol), followed by a number or letter. Each code changes the text style or chat color. Here's an example: §6Welcome will display the word "Welcome" in gold.

Typing The § Symbol

Typing the section symbol can vary based on your keyboard or operating system:

Windows: Press Windows key +. (period) and then select "Symbols" in the emoji panel to get the section symbol

Mac: Press Option + 6

If you face any issues, you can also copy paste it from here: §

Setting Colored Text On Signs

To add color text on a sign in Minecraft, just place the § code before your message. For instance:

§2Welcome to the Jungle

Will show up in dark green.

This should work on all signs, not limited to edited signs through commands or NBT data.

Setting Colored Text For Server Name

To change the MOTD (Message of the Day) or server name, open the server.properties file by going to the Files tab on the control panel and add the desired color code:

server-name=§bCool Server

This will display "Cool Server" in aqua when someone views your server in their multiplayer list.

Note: In the recent Bedrock updates, the color codes may not work in the vanilla server type server name

Formatting Text (Bold, Italics, etc.)

In addition to color codes, you can use formatting codes to style your messages:

§l = Bold text

§m = Strikethrough text

§n = Underlined

§o = Italic

§r = Reset format

You can mix and match formatting with color for stylish results!
